Let’s start with where it all began!

Mining bitcoins with your computer

The Bitcoin network was launched in 2009. It may be hard to believe in this day and age, but back then, it was still possible to mine bitcoins with your computer. All you needed was the CPU in your mom’s or dad’s computer, electricity, internet, and a little knowledge of how to run the right software. Then, after you fired up the software, you could earn up to 50 bitcoins per block! Of course, bitcoin wasn’t worth much in its early days. But as the price of bitcoin increased over time, opportunities arose for many in the crypto sector. In October 2010, this sparked the next step in the revolution of mining; GPU mining. A GPU is a graphics card, like the one you can use to play games. However, they were also much more efficient and faster in mining crypto than CPU mining. The crypto industry continued its rapid growth in the two years that followed. And as the industry grew, innovation increased as well. In 2012, ASIC technology was introduced. The difference between mining with a CPU or GPU is that an ASIC miner is specifically designed to do one task only; mine bitcoins. Bitmain introduces the Antminer S1

It didn’t take long before Bitmain introduced its first ASIC bitcoin miner. In November 2013, the company launched the Antminer S1. It marked the beginning of a series of BTC miners that would become immensely popular among miners worldwide. This popularity isn’t unsurprising considering the increases in computing power Bitmain managed to realize with each iteration of Antminers. Only a few months after the Antminer S1, which has a hash rate of 180 gigahashes per second, the Antminer S2 was introduced. The S2 produced a (for that time) whopping 1 terahashes per second, more than five times that of the S1. Bitmain wouldn’t think of sitting back and enjoying the successes of its first 2 Anminers. No, the company kept developing and launching new Antminers. In 2014 alone, Bitmain launched the S2, S3, S4, and S5, with each one of them improving efficiency and increasing the security of the Bitcoin network. When bitcoin made its first historic rally in 2017, when BTC reached $20.000, Bitmain continued releasing new miners. At this point, the Antminer saw nine iterations. Aside from releasing the Antminer S9, Bitmain also released variations of this specific model. For example, the Antminer T9 has a hash rate of 11,5 TH/s (more than ten times the earlier mentioned S2).

Bitmain Antminer S19 Pro: the latest and greatest in bitcoin mining

After this short history lesson, we now arrived at the latest of Bitmain’s innovations. Through the years, Bitmain kept on innovating. Innovating bitcoin miners consists of many aspects, not just improving computing chips. For example, also cooling is an essential part of mining bitcoins as efficiently as possible. This ASICs miner generates a mind-blowing 95 TH/s. When we take the Antminer S19 Pro, this number is even higher; 110 TH/s. The S19 Pro does all that with a power consumption of 3250 watts, making it one of the most efficient bitcoin miners to date. It is unlikely that Bitmain will stop here.
